River Hawks Handle Coppin State 10-2

Box Score
Behind a strong performance at the plate, the UMass Lowell softball team handled Copping State 10-2 in the finale of the Coppin State tournament in Baltimore, Md.

The River Hawks (3-12) clubbed 14 hits on their way to their second win in three games, and finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.

Freshmen Emily O'Brien (Salem, N.H.) led the hot swinging River Hawks at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 while scoring two runs and adding and RBI.

"We played consistent ball, lead in every game until the last inning and very easily could have been 4-0," said Head Coach Sean Cotter. "We're starting to swing the bats better up and down the lineup, and are starting to hit with power."

UMass Lowell chased CSU's Ellie Vogel after four innings, knocking the pitcher for eight hits and five runs. The River Hawks touched Vogel for four runs in the fourth inning, hitting a pair of doubles and two singles in the inning as O'Brien, Tori Alcorn (Lowell, Mass.), and Brianna Martin (Methuen, Mass.) all picked up RBI's in the inning.

The team would add two more runs in the fifth before tacking another four in the top of the seventh.

Sophomore Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) picked up her second win of the season, while hurling her second complete game. Handley struck out five and only gave up one earned run. She showed command of her pitches throwing 21 first pitch strikes to the 26 batters she faced and didn't surrender a walk.

Handley's performance drew praise from Cotter, as he called her effort this weekend the best of the season.

The River Hawks will make their America East home debut against Binghamton for a three-game series starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
