The UMass Lowell softball team returns to a road that has not been kind, this weekend, for six games in four days with stops in Baltimore, Md. and Hampton, Va.
Â
First stop, Friday, The Coppin State Tournament, a three day affair, with games against Mount St. Mary, Youngstown State, La Salle, and host Coppin State.
Â
The River Hawks, Monday, travel to Virginia to face Hampton for a doubleheader. Â
Â
UMass Lowell (1-10) is looking to rebound from two heartbreaking losses at the Rebel Games last weekend against Creighton and St. Francis (PA.)
Â
Despite a record malnourished in the win column, Coach
Sean Cotter has seen a series of positives noting the team had left everything on the diamond in a recent loss.
Â
"It makes it easier to go to sleep at night because we don't have anything else to leave out there," said Cotter. "We looked like a team that's ready to continue to compete."
Â
The team opens play against Youngstown State (8-7) at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, before a doubleheader against Mount St. Mary (7-8-1) at 11:15 a.m. and La Salle (3-7) at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The River Hawks close out the tournament against host Coppin State on Sunday at 10 a.m.
Â
Sophomore
Brianna Martin (Methuen, Mass.) leads the River Hawks at the plate with a .345 batting average, accruing 10 hits in 29 at bats. Martin leads the team in doubles (3) and total bases (13).
Â
Junior
Melissa King (Stamford, Conn.) and senior
Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) are tied for the team-high in RBI's with four each.
Â
The River Hawks and LaSalle were scheduled to meet twice at the Rebel Games a week ago but had to cancel due to inclement weather. The Explorers won the lone meeting, 10-4 over UMass Lowell last Saturday.
Â
The River Hawks make their America East Conference and home debut against Binghamton, at River View Field, on March 22.
