Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) knocked down five threes in a come-from-behind ,59-51, win over UMBC in Lowell, Mass. at the Costello Athletic Center, Saturday afternoon.
UMass Lowell sweeps the Retrievers an improves to 4-18 and 3-8 in America East, while UMBC falls to 2-21 overall, 1-10 in conference play.
The River Hawks trailed by 17 points with 2:02 remaining in the first half, when UMass Lowell finished the half on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 34-27 at halftime.
UMass Lowell started the second half with the momentum an managed to cut the lead to two, 34-32, after a layup by sophomore
Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) and three from Hayner. The River Hawks just couldn't manage to get the go ahead basket at the time.
With 5:21 to go in the game, UMass Lowell was down six, 49-43, and closed out the game with a 16-2 run. The River Hawks would take the lead with a three by Hayner, followed by four straight points for Doucette that gave UMass Lowell a 50-49 lead, its first lead since being up 2-0 to start the game.
Junior
Jasmine McRoy (Gaithersburg, Md.) had 16 points and nine rebounds. Doucette score 8 points and also grabbed nine rebounds. Freshman
Brittany Lomanno (Billerica, Mass.) had a game-high seven assists. Senior
Lauren Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) also had a solid game with six points and seven boards.
UMBC had three players in double figures lead by Taylor McCarley 13 points, Sara Tarbert and Bridget O'Donnell each scored 10 points. Tarbet had a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Retrievers out rebounded the River Hawks by a 43-33 margin. UMBC also dominated in the paint outscoring UMass Lowell 32-12.
The River Hawks will host Vermont Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Costello Athletic Center. UMBC will host Albany Tuesday 7:00 p.m. at The Rac Arena.
