Williams Milestone Leads River Hawks Over UNH, 58-52

Box Score

Senior guard Akeem Williams continued adding to his legacy as a River Hawk scoring 25 points to move into third place on the career-scoring list, and helped lead the River Hawks to a 58-52 victory and spoiling the New Hampshire senior night. Williams passed Bill Quirk (2,032 points) for fourth and Stacey Moragne (2,041 points) for third on the list and now has 2,045 points accrued in his decorated career.

The teams battled back-and-forth exchanging the lead 10 times, including four ties. No lead changes were more critical then in the final minutes when New Hampshire freshman Daniel Dion hit a three from the left wing with 49 second left to put UNH ahead 50-49, but Williams wouldn't be denied driving left and finishing while getting fouled. He would sink the free throw and put the River Hawks ahead for good following an unforced turnover by the Wildcats.

UMass Lowell improved its overall record to 9-18 with a 7-8 mark in the America East, while New Hampshire slides to 6-21 overall and 4-10 in the conference.

The River Hawks had a season-low six turnovers, their ninth time this season winning the turnover margin. The team is now 4-5 in games in which they commit less turnovers then their opposition.

With just over three minutes in the first half the River Hawks scored six unanswered on back-to-back triples from sophomore Mark Cornelius and freshman Tyler Livingston to make a 18-16 deficit a 22-18 lead. The River Hawks would take a 24-23 lead into the break.

UMass Lowell came out after the break and held the Wildcats to four points through the first 6:20, and in the same timespan scored 10 points, jumping ahead to a 34-27.

Senior Kerry Weldon put forth a strong defensive effort against UNH center Chris Pelcher who scored 10 points and had 12 rebounds but shot just 5-of-12 from the field. Pelcher had 13 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and swatted seven shot in his last outing against the River Hawks. Weldon totaled seven points and three rebounds while adding a spectacular chase down block against UNH's Jordan Bronner early in the first half.

Coming off the bench for the first time in three games, senior Antonio Bivins neared a double-double but finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Bivins 10 points were highlighted by a big-time dunk over Pelcher off a pretty touch pass from Weldon with just over six minutes left in the game.

The River Hawks reversed their fortunes from the last meeting when they were outscored 22-8 in points in the paint. This time around UMass Lowell won the points in the paint battle 28-16. The team also claimed the hustle stats in points off turnover (11-3) and also outscored the Wildcats 30-18 in the paint.

The River Hawks finish the season 4-12 on the road and conclude their inaugural season in the America East and Division I on Thursday night when they host senior night against Maine at 7 P.M.
