LOWELL, Mass. – Junior Jasmine McRoy (Gaithersburg, Md.) scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed 6 rebounds to lead UMass Lowell over Vermont, 88-71, Wednesday night at the Costello Athletic Center, in Lowell, Mass.
Vermont falls to 6-18 overall, 3-8 in America East and will play at UMBC Binghamton on Saturday. The River Hawks improve to 5-18, 4-8 in conference action and will host the Seawolves of Stony Brook on Saturday at The Tongas Center.
The River Hawks jumped out to a, 9-0, and had a, 27-5, advantage a little over eight minutes into the game. The Catamounts would responded with a 21-4 run to cut it to six, 31-25, with three to go in the first half, but would never get any closer the rest of the night.
UMass Lowell led 38-28 at halftime.
Sophomore Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds, 10 in the first half. Junior Shannon Samuels (Windsor, Conn.) scored 21 points to go along with her game-high five assist. Also in double-figures for the River Hawks was freshman Brittany Lomanno (Billerica, Mass.) who scored 10 points.
UMass Lowell shot 47.4% (27-57) from the floor for the game, while Vermont shot just 39.1% (27-69). The River Hawks had a big advantage from the free throw line shooting 80.6% (25-31) compared to the Catamounts who struggled shooting just 36.0% (9-25).
The Catamounts were led by freshman Kylie Butler double-double, 27 points and 12 rebounds. Vermont's junior Kayla Burchill scored 15 points and also grabbed 12 boards.
UMass Lowell forced 24 turnovers compared to committing just 20.
The Catamounts had the advantage on the boards, out rebounding UMass Lowell 44-37.
The transition game was working tonight for the River Hawks out scoring Vermont 15-0.
