The UMass Lowell men's basketball team nearly duplicated the game they played against Binghamton just over a month ago reeling off a 19-2 run to start the second half on their way to a 62-55 victory at Costello Athletic Center.

The River Hawks (6-14, 5-4 America East) added to the Bearcats (4-18, 1-8 America East) road woes as Binghamton dropped their seventh game overall and ninth straight on the road. UMass Lowell improves to 6-14 overall and 5-4 in the America East while Binghamton falls to 4-18 overall and 1-8 in the conference.

When the teams met on January 11th, UMass Lowell used a 18-2 run in the second half en route to a 71-59 victory.

Binghamton got off to a quick start scoring the games first six points before Mark Cornelius (Westford, Mass.) got himself and the River Hawks going with a layup in transition. The basket was two of what would be a season-high 12 points for Cornelius.

The teams were neck-and-neck for most of the first half before the Bearcats went on a 19-5 run, turning a 19-17 lead into a 35-22 lead at halftime. The teams exchanged leads seven times.

UMass Lowell came out firing to after the break as senior Akeem Williams (Brockton, Mass.) got things going by hitting a jumper from the free throw line. The River Hawks outscored the Bearcats 19-2 over the first 7:42 of the second half to take 41-37 lead.

Binghamton would answer with five unanswered to go back ahead 42-41.

UMass Lowell outscored Binghamton 40-20 in the second half with Williams scoring 16 of his 19 after the intermission. The team had four players reach double-figure point totals led by Williams' 19. Williams was preceded by Bivins' 13 points while Cornelius and junior Chad Holley (New York, N.Y.) each chipped in 12 points.

Turnovers were a key as the River Hawks we're a bit careless in the first half, turning the ball over 11 times but cleaned that up with only three in the second half.

Antonio Bivins (Miami, Fla.) who recently broke the 1,000 point mark during his career is now just seven points shy from tying Kevin Carr with 1,068 points on the all-time list.

UMass Lowell has a quick turnaround as they host NJIT Monday at 7 P.M. at Costello Athletic Center. The teams met earlier this year with the Highlanders winning that decision 55-44.
