Box Score (PDF)NEW YORK – Junior forward
Lindsey Doucette's (Hopkinton, Mass.) double-double helped propel the UMass Lowell women's basketball team to a 69-59 wire to wire victory over Columbia at Levien Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
Â
Doucette scored 14 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked two shots as the River Hawks (3-3) won their third straight game. The loss for Columbia (3-5) is their second consecutive at home.
Â
UMass Lowell was stout on the defensive end, holding the Lions scoreless until Carolyn Gallagher got CU on the board when she made an elbow jumper at the 14:11 mark. The 59 points were the second fewest allowed this season by the River Hawks who held the Lions to 20.7 percent shooting from the field in the first half and 36.5 percent for the game.
Â
Seniors
Jasmine McRoy (Gaithersburg, Md.) and
Shannon Samuels (Windsor, Conn.) came up big for the River Hawks late in the game. Samuels, who was 2-for-4 from the field, sank a wing three with 49 seconds left to put the team up nine, 63-54. A few possessions later McRoy stole a pass from Sara Mead and took it the other way for a easy lay-in to put out any comeback hopes for Columbia.
Â
Four River Hawks reached double figures in points led by McRoy's 19. Freshman
Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) continued her emergence off the bench, scoring 12 points and grabbing five rebounds in 17 minutes of action.
Â
Samuels entered the contest needing 16 points for 500 in her career but came up four points short of the feat. Fouls forced Samuels to the bench in the first half as she played just seven minutes and was held scoreless on a single shot attempt. The America East Preseason All-Conference selection answered a forgettable first half with a 12-point (4-5 FG) second half effort.
Â
The three game stretch that started with a 93-41 triumph over Mt. Ida is the longest streak since 2012-13 when the team rattled off nine in a row.
Â
UMass Lowell will return to action on Saturday for a noon tip against Providence at Alumni Hall.
