River Hawks Hit The Road Looking To Extend Streak

The River Hawks will travel to Columbia and Providence

SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS: The River Hawks enter today's contest winners of the last three after beating Mt. Ida, Fairleigh Dickinson and most recently Columbia. Lindsey Doucette, Jasmine McRoy, Shannon Samuels and Kayla Gibbs each reached double figures in points with Doucette adding 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. 

UMass Lowell was stout on the defensive end, holding the Lions scoreless until the 14:13 mark of the first half and only surrendered 59 points, the second lowest mark this season. The River Hawks held the Lions to 20.7 percent shooting from the field in the first half and 36.5 percent for the game.

The team has found its rhythm offensivly during the current win streak, shooting   47.8 percent from the field (88/184 FG), 36.1 percent on three pointers (26/72 3FG) while compiling 52 assists. In the previous three loses the team shot 37.0 percent from the floor (64/173), 29.2 percent from distance (21/72 3FG) and had 39 assists.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS: Providence enters Saturdayís action with a 2-5 record after rallying from a 17-point deficit to upend Villanova 51-49 in their Big East opener on Wednesday at Alumni Hall. The Friars are led by Preseason All-Big East selection Alexis Harris who is averaging 14.4 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. Senior guard Tori Rule leads the team in scoring (16.1) and has 13 of the teams 25 made three-pointers this season.

ALL-TIME SERIES: Today's matchup will mark the second meeting between the River Hawks and the Friars. UMass Lowell, who was making its Division I debut, was handed a 109-74 loss to PC at home. The Friars had four players with double digit point totals, including two who also grabbed double figure rebound totals. The River Hawks connected on 10 three-pointers but shot 29.1 percent from the field.

LAST STREAK: The three game stretch that started with a 93-41 triumph over Mt. Ida is the longest streak for the River Hawks since the 2012-13 campaign when the team rattled off nine wins in a row.

CHANGE OF PLANS: The River Hawks announced three time changes to the schedule, moving up the Dec. 19 game at Duke from 7 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and pushing back the game at Holy Cross on Dec. 22 from 11 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

NEARING A MILESTONE: Senior guard Shannon Samuels has 56 points thus far into the season and has scored 496 in her career. Samuels 440 point output last season landed her 10th on the programs single season point total.

DOUCETTE STEPPING UP: After recording seven double-doubles in 2013-14, junior forward Lindsey Doucette produced her first of the season on Wednesday night. She scored 14 points (6/10 FG), grabbed 11 rebounds, handed out three assists, blocked two shots and picked up a steal. Doucette has improved her efficiency from the field and sits third in the America East with a 53.7 field goal percentage, up from the 41.8 percent she shot last season. 

McROY HEATING UP: Guard Jasmine McRoy leads the River Hawks offense with 14.2 points per game and after scoring a team-high 19 against Columbia has led the team in scoring three times. The senior has poured in 43 points the last two games on 12-of-29 (41.4%) shooting, including 6-of-14 (42.9%) from distance. She has also connected on 13 of 16 free throws (81.3%) after making three of seven through the first four games.

RIVER HAWKS FLYING HIGH IN AE: The River Hawks are atop the America East Conference in several categories. The team leads the AE in free throw percentage (72.7%), 3-point field goals made (7.8 avg/g) and percentage (32.6%), blocked shots (4.2 bpg) and assists (15.2 apg). The squad is also second in scoring offense (69.2 ppg) and field goal percentage (42.6%).

GIBBS IMPACT: After failing to appear in the first three games of the season, freshman Kayla Gibbs has made the most of her playing time, producing 35 points in 43 minutes. Gibbs has made her presence felt inside going 14-of-23 on field goal attempts (60.9%).
