BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- The No. 7 ranked UMass Lowell hockey team was victorious against UConn, 3-1, in the Championship Game of the Frozen Holiday Classic on Sunday evening at Webster Bank Arena.

With the win, the River Hawks upped their record to 12-3-3 overall, while UConn drops to 4-9-4 on the season. Sophomore defenseman Dylan Zink (Madison, Wis.) was named MVP of the Frozen Holiday Classic and junior goaltender Kevin Boyle (Manalapan, N.J.) joined him on the All-Tournament Team for their efforts over the weekend in Bridgeport. Zink finished the weekend with two goals, 10 shots on goal and a +4 rating.

Zink got the River Hawks on the scoreboard with 2:07 left in the first period with a wrist shot at the top of the right faceoff circle that beat UConn goaltender Rob Nichols glove side for his fifth goal of the season. UMass Lowell owned a 14-9 shot advantage in the first frame against the Huskies.

Junior forward Michael Colantone (Cave Creek, Ariz.) made it a 2-0 game for his fifth of the season with three minutes left in the game off a pretty backhanded tip with a feed from Michael Fallon (Glenview, Ill.) off the right wall. Junior forward A.J. White (Dearborn, Mich.) made it a 3-0 game with an empty-netter with 1:05 left in the game, but UConn's Cody Sharib struck back with 13 seconds left to get the Huskies on the scoreboard.

UMass Lowell outshot the Huskies, 38-24, which included a 15-8 advantage in the middle frame. Boyle stopped 23 shots in his ninth win of the season for the River Hawks. Nichols made 35 total saves for UConn in the losing effort. Zink notched a game-high six shots on goal in the game, while Colantone won 10 of 13 faceoffs (77%) for the River Hawks.

The River Hawks return to action on Friday, January 2nd against Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) at the Mariucci Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. Game time is 4 p.m. (CT).
