SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS: The River Hawks fell in their home opener to Rhode Island on Wednesday night, 75-66. After trailing by as much as 11 in the first half the Rams rallied back to tie the game at 34 at halftime.
Sophomore Asia Mitchell-Owens kept the River Hawks on the Rams heels hitting two late triples to trim the URI lead down to a single point at 67-66, but the Rams capitalized on two late turnovers to hang on for the win. Senior guard Jasmine McRoy scored a team high 16 points while junior guard Melissa Frase netted 13 points.
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS:Â Central Connecticut come to Lowell with a 1-2 record after losing its last two games, 75-63 to Hartford, and 79-57 to Siena. Nicole Ferguson and Kaley Watras are both averaging nine points per game to lead the offense. Amanda Harrington controls the defense with 6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game. As a team the Blue Devils are shooting 39 percent (71-182), including 35.8 percent (24-67) from long range. In its two losses combined Central Connecticut has only held the lead for 73 seconds, all coming in the first 2:27 of the Siena game.
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS: Mount Ida enters Monday's matchup with the River Hawks at 2-3 after winning two straight. They defeated Lesley College 71-38 and Daniel Webster College 82-62 this past Saturday. The Mustangs started the season 0-3 with losses to Brandeis 85-36, Regis College 67-47, and Westfield State 89-42. Leading the Mustangs is sophomore Stephanie Champoux who's averaging 11.8 points per game and 33.8 minutes per game. Sophomore Katlyn Jesse is the second leading scorer averaging 10.2 points per game and 3.2 rebounds per game. Center Angelique Martinez is averaging 9.2 rebounds per game for the Mustangs. Â
LONG OVERDUE: UMass Lowell and Central Connecticut will meet for the first time since the 1986-87 season. The squads were scheduled to meet last season but had to cancel the game due to inclement road and weather conditions.
RIGHT AT HOME: The River Hawks are in the second game of a four game homestand. The stretch began with a 75-66 loss to URI while the team will host Mt. Ida on Monday Nov. 24 and Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday Nov. 30.
BABY STEPS: Nicole Riddick and Brianna Rudolph have earned the starting nod for the River Hawks in their first two games. Riddick stepped into the starting lineup against No. 3 Notre Dame while Rudolph started against Rhode Island on Wednesday.
MITCHELL-OWENS LOCKED IN: Asia Mitchell-Owens was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field on Wednesday, with all her attempts coming from long range. The five triples were the most since Nicole Hayner connected on five three times last season, Shannon Samuels also sank five triples once last year.
PARRA'S PRESENCE: After totalling 29 rebounds and nine blocks all of last year, sophomore Lauren Parra has got off to a fast start, collecting 10 rebounds against URI (11 total) and has swatted four shots through both games this season, picking up a pair in each contest.
