LOWELL, Mass. –
The UMass Lowell men's basketball team hits the road for a busy week, playing three games to round out a five-game, season-opening road swing. The River Hawks start the trip with a 7 p.m. tilt at Sacred Heart University on Thursday, November 20. The squad will then visit NJIT on Saturday, Nov. 22 for a 2 p.m. matinee before squaring off against Fordham on Sunday, Nov. 23 beginning at 6 p.m.
 
LOOKING AT UMASS LOWELL
The River Hawks went 0-2 on the road last week. The team dropped a 92-55 decision in its season opener at Ohio State on November 14 before falling, 72-55, at Rhode Island on Nov. 16.  
 
LAST TIME OUT
Redshirt-freshman Jahad Thomas (Williamsport, Pa.) and freshman Lance Crawford (Davie, Fla.) logged 17 and 16 points, respectively, to pace the UMass Lowell men's basketball team in a 72-56 setback at the University of Rhode Island on Nov. 16. The River Hawks trailed by just six at the break, but the Rams scored the first five points of the second half during an 18-10 run to pull away. Thomas added a team-best six rebounds, while Crawford went 7-for-8 on free throws and notched two assists. Graduate student Marco Banegas-Flores (Boston, Mass.) aided in the team's strong performance at the line (21-26), going 7-for-7, in addition to rounding out the double-digit scorers for the River Hawks with 11 points and a career-high four steals.
 
LEADING THE FLOCK
Through two games, Jahad Thomas leads the River Hawks with 32.5 minutes, 17.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Lance Crawford and classmate Matt Harris (Erie, Pa.) have added to the offensive effort with 13.5 and 6.0 points, respectively. Marco Banegas-Flores, who paces the squad with five steals, averages 5.5 points, as well. Redshirt-senior Kerry Weldon (New York, N.Y.) is second on the team with 3.5 rebounds per game. As a team, UMass Lowell is shooting 40.0% (36-90) from the floor and 38.5% (10-26) from beyond the arc. The squad is also shooting 76.3% (8-12) from the line.
 
SCOUTING SACRED HEART
The Pioneers enter Thursday's matchup with the River Hawks at 1-0 after defeating Hartford, 71-53, in their season opener on November 14. De'Von Barnett led the offense with 18 points on 8-for-11 shooting. He also led the team with seven rebounds. Evan Kelley added 13 points and Jordan Allen came off the bench to chip in 13 points and five boards, as well. As a whole, Sacred Heart is shooting 58.8% (30-51) from the field, but only 12.5% (1-8) from three-point range.
 
SCOUTING NJIT
The Highlanders, who play at UAlbany on Wednesday evening before welcoming UMass Lowell on Saturday, are 1-1 so far this year. After suffering a 77-58 season-opening loss at St. John's on Nov. 14, the team bounced back with its first win of the year against Maine, 90-86. Ky Howard and Winfield Willis pace the team with 14.0 points per game. Howard also boasts a team-high 7.0 rebounds per game, and is tied for first on the team with Damon Lynn for assists (6). NJIT is shooting 42.3% (47-11) from the floor, including 30.2% (13-43) from beyond the arc, and 66.1% (41-62) on free throws.
 
SCOUTING FORDHAM
Fordham is 1-1 on the young season following a 94-77 victory against NYIT to open the season and a 73-54 loss to Penn State on Nov. 16. Eric Paschall leads the team with 19.0 points per game, and has a team-high five three-pointers. Chris Sengfielder and Mandell Thomas add 13.5 and 11.0 points, respectively. Ryan Rhoomes is averaging 10.5 rebounds per game, and has hit all 10 of his free throws. The Rams have shot 38.6% (51-132) from the field, 38.0% (19-50) on three-pointers and 75.0% (27-36) from the foul line. Fordham faces off against Maryland on Nov. 20 before hosting the River Hawks. 
 
ROAD WARRIORS
The River Hawks, who begin the new year with a five-game road swing, will play 18 games away from home in 2014-15. In addition to having played Ohio State and URI on opening weekend, other featured road games for UMass Lowell include Atlantic 10 Conference members Fordham (Nov. 23) and Duquesne (Dec. 20), Ivy League schools Cornell (Dec. 6) and Brown (Jan. 5), as well as Boston College (Dec. 29) of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The team has accumulated a 75-84 road record since 2003-04.
 
SWEET SPOT
The team hit its groove at the foul line on Nov. 16 against Rhode Island. In that outing, the team knocked down a season-high 21 free throws (80.8%). So far this season, the River Hawks are 76.3% from the charity stripe, good for second in the America East, and are averaging 6.0 more free throws made a game than their opposition.
