LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell community is remembering former Men's Basketball Head Coach Tony Romano, who passed away following a short illness on October 10.
"The UMass Lowell community was deeply saddened to hear of Tony Romano's passing," Athletic Director
Dana Skinner said. "His accomplishments in the field of athletics and education were impactful, but what made him special is the quality of man he was. Our university will miss him, and our thoughts and prayers are with Tony's family and many friends."
Romano coached at UMass Lowell from 1976-1983, accumulating an overall career record of 71-109. During his tenure at the university, Romano developed three future UMass Lowell Hall of Fame members in Stephen Oliver '79, Chris Prince '79 and John Paganetti '84. His 1978-79 squad still holds the school record for free throws with 588 on the season, as well as the record for highest rebound margin (11.6).
