Men's Basketball: River Hawks Aim To End Skid, Take On Maine

Series At A Glance
The River Hawks draw even against Maine at 1-1 in the all-time series. The history isn't long between the teams and you have to go back to the '87-'88 season to find their last meeting. Once again for UMass Lowell this will be the first meeting between the two universities as Division I programs.
'84-'85: L, 63-86
'87-'88: W, 75-73 OT
Last Time Out
UMass Lowell guard Akeem Williams had a team-high 21 points but couldn't match or overcome an early deficit as Hartfords Wes Cole hit a career-high 10 3-pointers. The River Hawks cut the Hartford lead to 12 early in the second half but couldn't get any closer.
Senior Antonio Bivins who was fresh off becoming the latest member of the 1,000 point club was second on the team with 10 points
Holley's Half K
Junior guard Chad Holley who transfered after one year at Mt. Saint Mary's College (NY) scored five points against Hartford which gives him 500 points scored in his career at UMass Lowell and 592 overall.
Bivins 1k Milestone
Antonio Bivins' layup in the closing seconds in the loss at Stony Brook were more than just two points as he surpassed the 1,000 point milestone and now has 1,001 for his career. He became the 37th player in the programs history to achieve the feat.
Bivins Elite Company
If Antonio Bivins can collect 35 more rebounds this season, he'll become just the 5th player in the programs history to have 1,000+ points and 500+ rebounds.
Bivins Return
The River Hawks welcomed senior Antonio Bivins back to the floor earlier this month against UMBC where he scored14 points, adding four rebounds in 26 minutes of action. Bivins had originally planned to redshirt the year after suffering an achilles injury in the offseason.
The Miami, FL native was named to the NE-10 All-Conference Third Team a year ago posting six double-doubles and averages of 15.5 ppg, 7.4 rpg, and 1.1 bpg. He also ranked among NE-10 leaders in steals (2nd, 2.0), offensive rebounds (5th, 3.2), rebounds (10th, 7.4), and blocked shots (9th, 1.1).
Getting Comfortable In The AE
Akeem Williams who led the NE-10 in scoring the previous two seasons is making his presence felt in his first and only year in the America East. The senior guard is averaging 16.83 ppg in conference play including his season-high of 23 in a road win at Binghamton.
Defending The Line
The River Hawks have been all over their opponents on the perimeter, contesting and closing out on shooters which has limited their opposition to the conferences 2nd lowest mark at .313% from distance and also the 2nd lowest total in the AE as opponents have made 103 treys.
Climbing Up The Board
Senior guard Akeem Williams' first made basket against the Black Bears will move him into fifth place on the career scoring list. Williams has scored 1,867 career points and currently trails Leo Parent ('89) who amassed 1,868 points during his career. The next milestone for Williams would be breaking the 2,000 point mark and passing Bill Quirk ('66-'72) who totalled 2,032 points during his career.
Williams needs to average 19.33 ppg to pass Elad Inbar ('00-'04) to claim the River Hawks career scoring crown.
Williams is now 9th in the programs career assist list with 323 and needs 14 more to pass Carl Benn ('02-'06) to claim the 8th spot.
Bench Improvements
Antonio Bivins' return has sparked the bench scoring for the River Hawks. In the 12 games prior to his return from injury the bench had averaged 11.08 points a game. His services have increased the bench scoring to 17.8 ppg.
January Success
The River Hawks 3-2 mark this month improves the teams record in January to 17-6 since 2012.
'12-'13 Jan. Record: 6-3
'11-'12 Jan. Record: 8-1
Scouting The Black Bears

Xavier Pollard leads the team in scoring (14.9) and rebounding (4.5) and is trailed by Dimitry Coronel who is netting 14.2 ppg.
