Men's Basketball: Bivins Sets Milestone, River Hawks Clipped By Stony Brook 70-65

Box Score

The UMass Lowell men's basketball team fell just short of upsetting conference leader Stony Brook who ultimately won their 11th straight conference game and 21st at Pritchard Gymnasium 70-65.

Senior forward Antonio Bivins (Miami, FL) did all he could, eclipsing the 1,000 point mark for his career scoring a season-high 21 points and also collected six rebounds in 31 minutes of action as the River Hawks 3-game win streak came to an end.

UMass Lowell (4-12, 3-2 America East) scored the game's opening bucket on a layup from senior Kerry Weldon (New York, N.Y.) but couldn't regain the lead following a 9-0 run by the Seawolves.

Stony Brook (12-6, 4-0 America East) won their 11th straight conference game and 21st consecutive game behind sophomore Jameel Warney who leads the conference in scoring and is second in rebounding led the Seawolves with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The River Hawks leading scorer senior Akeem Williams (Brockton, MA) who came into the game averaging 19.25 in conference play was plagued with foul trouble, fouling out of the game with a season-low three points in just 12 minutes of action.

In what was the first meeting between the two since 1998, the River Hawks trimmed a 14 point second half deficit down to three in the final minute. Freshman Tyler Livingston (Hudson, N.H.) had a chance to tie the game the game at 64 but his 3-point attempt was just off the mark.

Bivins was active on both ends right from the get-go stealing the ball on three separate occasions leading to a three-point play, a breakaway dunk, and a Stony Brook foul. The senior who had planned to redshirt the year after sustaining an achilles injury broke the 1,000 point mark in the closing seconds when he put back a missed three from Chad Holley (New York, N.Y.)

For the second straight game Weldon scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds while adding two steals and a block.

The River Hawks shot a higher percentage from the field (40%) in the first half than the Seawolves did (36.4%) but went into the break trailing by seven.

UMass Lowell will have Sunday off before traveling north to face Hartford for a 1 P.M. tip-off on Monday.
