Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) led the River Hawks with 14 points but it wasn't enough as America East pre-season favorites Albany defeated UMass Lowell 87-50 Thursday night at Costello Athletic Center.
With the loss UMass Lowell falls to 2-13 overall and 1-3 in America East and while travel to play Stony Brook on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
The Great Danes improved to 13-3 and a perfect 3-0 in America East and host Maine on Saturday.
Doucette finished the night with 14 points, six rebound, four blocks, three steals all which led the River Hawks tonight. Junior
Shannon Samuels (Windsor, Conn.) scored 12 points and dished out six assists.
For the tenth game this season UMass Lowell won the turnover the margin, 25-18. The River Hawks who lead the America East in steals, had 15 tonight. The Great Danes outrebounded UMass Lowell 54-28.
The River Hawks struggled in the first half shooting just 25.9% (7-27) compared to the Great Danes who shot 42.9% (12-28). Albany was helped out by shooting 77.8% (7-9) from beyond the arc and took a 40-15 halftime lead into the locker room.
The second half UMass Lowell improved to shot 40.0 % from the field (12-30) but couldn't chip away from the lead after Albany improved their shooting percentage to 50.0 % (18-36) and outscored the River Hawks 47-35 in the second stanza.
The Great Danes had its way in the paint, outscoring the River Hawks 36-18, and outscored the UMass Lowell bench 27-6. Albany also outscored the River Hawks from the free throw line 17-10.
Albany came in ranked 9
th in the latest College Insider Mid-Major Poll, and had two players selected to the America East Preseason All-Conference Team. Last year's Rookie of the Year Shereesha Richards had a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Megan Craig had 10 points. Tammy Phillip grabbed 19 boards.
