BALTIMORE, MD (Jan. 11, 2014) – Junior Jasmine McRoy (Gaithersburg, Md.) returned back home to lead UMass Lowell to its first Division I and America East Conference win. The River Hawks defeated the Retrievers, 65-57, in Baltimore, Md. at the Rac Arena, Saturday afternoon. Â
McRoy, a Maryland native set a new career-high of 22 points (9-19) and went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. She also was active on the boards with a team-high nine rebounds.Â
The game had 13 lead changes, nine ties and wasn't decided until freshman Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) hit a three to give the River Hawks a 58-57 lead with 4:26 left in the game. UMass Lowell finished the game on a 10-0 run.
UMass Lowell entered halftime down, 29-25, but started the second half on a 7-0 run after a buckets by McRoy and Doucette, followed by a three from Hayner to give the River Hawks a 32-29 lead. That was the first of 10 lead changes in just the second half alone, with neither team having a bigger lead than four.
UMass Lowell improves to 1-12 and 1-2 in America East, while UMBC falls to 2-13 overall, 1-2 in America East
Sophomore Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored all 13 points in second stanza and grabbed eight rebounds.
The third River Hawk in double-figures was sophomore Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.) who finished with 11 points.
UMBC had two players in double figures lead by Sara Tarbert 16 points and Bridget O'Donnell 13 points. Tarbet also had a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Retrievers out rebounded the River Hawks by a 46-35 margin. UMBC also dominated in the paint outscoring UMass Lowell 24-8.
The River Hawks will have little rest as they host Mount Ida Monday night at 6 p.m. at Costello Athletic Center. UMBC will host UNH Wednesday at noon at The Rac Arena. Â
