Missed Chances for River Hawks at LaSalle

Hopkins with seven saves; River Hawks outshoot Explorers 19-18/12-10

Box Score
PHILADELPHIA (Sept. 8, 2013) – Senior F Olivia Shoemaker scored two goals to lead La Salle University over UMass Lowell, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in a non-conference field hockey clash at DeVincent Field.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 0-3 this season, its first as a Division I program, and hosts Bryant University next Sunday (1:00).

La Salle improved to 1-3 and visits Sacred Heart Friday at 7:00.

UMass Lowell outshot the Explorers 19-18 overall and 12-10 on target, but was unable to capitalize. The River Hawks put together good spells and kept La Salle goalkeeper, junior Lisa Shafer, on edge throughout the match.

"It was a win-able game. We just haven't been able to finish our opportunities," said Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk. I felt we dominated play in the first half, but in the second half showed a little inexperience."

La Salle opened the scoring in the 29th minute on a penalty corner which made its way to Shoemaker, who tipped home.

UMass Lowell came back with several chances and brought a host of saves in quick succession from Shaffer.

Freshman F Jahna Driscoll (Greene, N.Y.) had a chance denied by Shaffer. Off the ensuing corner, Shaffer stopped shots by freshman M Georgia Cowderoy (Ashmore, Australia) and sophomore F Kelly Freitas (Manchester, N.H.) seconds apart and an attempt by senior F Melissa Effertz (Oceanside, Calif.) was just wide.

La Salle doubled its lead in the 58h minute when senior GK Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) saved a shot freshman F Abbey Lawrence, but senior F Mariel Papa was there to tuck in the rebound.

The Explorers capitalized on a similar play four minutes later. Hopkins saved a penalty stroke from junior F Maddy Tettelbach, but Lawrence fed the rebound to Shoemaker, who stroked home.

Hopkins had 7 saves for UMass Lowell while Shaffer finished with 12.
