Facing its second nationally-ranked opponent in as many days, UMass Lowell suffered a 6-0 loss at the University of Massachusetts Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference field hockey clash at Garber Field.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 0-2 in its inaugural Division I season and visits LaSalle (0-2) Sunday afternoon at 12:00. UMass, ranked No. 14 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Preseason Poll, improved to 3-0.

On Monday, the River Hawks suffered a 3-0 loss at home to No. 11 Northwestern.

Tuesday's match marked the inaugural Kennedy Cup between the schools, named after John F. Kennedy, an alumnus of UMass Lowell ('70) and UMass ('76) and supporter of both universities.
UMass held the River Hawks without a shot (22-0) as senior GK Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) had 14 saves.

The Minutewomen capitalized on four set pieces and jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the break. Sophomore M Brooke Sabia opened the scoring in the eighth minute when she possessed a rebound off a saved shot and lofted over Hopkins.

Sabia doubled the UMass lead in the 23rd when she slapped home a penalty corner off a set from senior M Alexa Sikalis from the top of the circle. Junior B Lauren Allymohamed gave UMass a 3-0 cushion on another corner when she converted a pass from sophomore B Allie Sabia just inside the left post.

The Minutwomen maintained the pressure in the opening minutes of the second half when Sikalis fed senior B Hannah Prince, who found the far corner of the cage from the left side.

Freshman M Cliodhna Loughlin tucked home a saved shot for a 5-0 lead in the 48th minute and freshman B Hannah Farrell capped the scoring in the 56th when she finished off a penalty corner from senior F Alyssa Ineson.

UMass compiled a 12-1 lead on penalty corners.
