LOWELL, Mass. (Sept. 29, 2013) – The UMass Lowell River Hawks (1-8, 0-1 America East) fell to the visiting Villanova Wildcats (3-6, 0-2 BIG EAST), 3-0, at the Cushing Athletic Complex today.
UMass Lowell dominated in corners, 16-10, capitalizing on one only to see the goal, which would have knotted the score at 1-1, waved off. Villanova held off a pesky River Hawks squad and made the most of their own chances. Both teams were even at 14 shots apiece, with Villanova finding the net with 10 and UMass Lowell with 6 on goal for the day.
Goal scorers for Villanova included Jessica Swoboda, who scored in the 19
th minute, and Maddy Harding who picked up a pair, her first coming in the 32
nd minute before closing out the game with a score off the corner as time expired. Swoboda factored in all three goals for the Wildcats.
2013 marks the first Division I season for the UMass Lowell River Hawks and first in America East. The River Hawks previously competed in Division II's Northeast-10 Conference where they captured the conference championship in each of the last three years and advanced to the NCAA championship match in each of the past six seasons. The team will head on the road for their next pair of games, facing Hofstra University Friday, October 5 and Columbia University Saturday, October 6, before returning home on Wednesday, October 9 to host Harvard.
