Hofstra Breaks Game Open with 4 2nd Half Goals
HEMPSTEAD, NY (October 4, 2013) – The UMass Lowell River Hawks (1-9, 0-1 America East) held their own for the first 36 minutes of today's game at Hofstra University (5-7) only to see the Pride storm to a 6-2 win with a dominating second half.
UMass Lowell got on the scoreboard first as F Jahna Driscoll (Greene, NY) scored off a deflection in the 6th minute of play. Hofstra answered back in the 17th minute when F Stella Schoen stole a River Hawks' pass and found the back of the goal to knot the score at 1-1. The Pride would take their first lead of the day in the 32nd minute as this week's ECAC Player of the Week F Jonel Boileau tipped it past River Hawks goalkeeper Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) to give Hofstra the 2-1 advantage heading into the half.
The River Hawks came out quickly in the second half as M Georgia Cowderoy (Ashmore, Queensland, Australia) picked up an unassisted goal to bring the teams even at 2-2. The team's second half woes continued, however, as Hofstra, who dominated in corners 11-3, took control of the game throughout the second half, scoring four unanswered goals. Hopkins finished the day with 12 saves on 18 shots while Hofstra's GK Kaitlyn De Turo surrendered two goals on 7 shots on goal.
The River Hawks, who previously competed in Division II's Northeast-10 Conference where they captured the conference championship in each of the last three years and advanced to the NCAA championship match in each of the past six seasons, are competing in Division I for the first time this season. 2013-14 also marks the first season for the team as a member of the America East Conference.
UMass Lowell will finish off their New York road trip at Columbia University on Sunday at 1 PM before returning home on Wednesday, October 9 to host Harvard.
