UMass Lowell women 15th among 20 teams; Codfish Bowl next

Freshman Jaclyn Solimine (Haverhill, Mass.) placed 59^th in a field of 190 runners to lead the UMass Lowell women's cross country team to 15^th place at the Iona College Meet of Champions Saturday morning at Van Cortlandt Park.

UMass Lowell compiled 389 points (59, 68, 73, 93, 96 – 111, 113) while the University of Albany won the team title with 67 points (4, 5, 6, 19, 33). The host Gaels finished runner-up with 100 points and were followed by Quinnipiac (122), Brown (157) and Kent State (161).

Solimine ran the 5K course in 24:20.29 while freshman Erin Donovan (Lowell, Mass.) finished 69^th overall and 68^th among scoring runners in 24:42.28.

Senior Gina Butler (Dracut, Mass.) finished 75^th/73^rd in 24:52.76 while senior Bridget Meehan (Nashua, N.H.) took 103^rd/93^rd in 25:37.35; and freshman Renee Vigneault (Amesbury, Mass.) 110^th/96^th in 25:45.49.

Sophomore Kelsey O'Driscoll (New Providence, N.J.) placed 136^th/111^th in 26:31.39 and freshman Jennifer Pisarik (Chelmsford, Mass.) 138^th/113^th in 26:32.58 to round out UMass Lowell's top seven.

"We've got three freshmen in our top five," said Head Coach Gary Gardner. "I thought Gina and Erin passed 30 runners over the last half of the race. It was a good effort considering we're so young. We are certainly headed in the right direction."

Sophomore Kate Avery of Iona won the individual title in 21:31.03.

Manhattan, St. John's, Siena and St. Francis (N.Y.) were among teams UMass Lowell defeated on the day.

UMass Lowell enters the Codfish Bowl Invitational next Saturday at Franklin Park.
