ST. BONAVANTURE, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2013) – St. Bonaventure University broke a 1-1 deadlock with two goals within a minute early in the second half to defeat UMass Lowell, 3-1, Friday afternoon in a non-conference women's soccer match at McGraw-Jennings Field.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 0-7 and hosts Harvard Sunday at 3:00 at Cushing Field. The matches halted a five-game winless streak for St. Bonaventure which improved to 2-5-1 and visits the University of St. Louis next Friday.

Playing the third of three straight matches away from home, UMass Lowell opened the scoring in the seventh minute when freshman M Erin Scanlon (Auburn, Mass.) capitalized on a free kick from 20 yards which sophomore GK Christina Sarokon misjudged.

The Bonnies leveled in the 22nd minute when sophomore M Colleen Corliss (Pittsfield, N.H.) was whistled for a handball in the area. Junior F Molly Curry slotted the spot kick off the left post past sprawling junior GK Jane Hatzikonstantis (Tewksbury, Mass.).

The goal was the result of a good spell for St. Bonaventure, which who peppered the River Hawks for six straight attempts prior, including a shot off the post by sophomore F Abby Maiello seconds before the goal.

The Bonnies struck for the two goals in the 53rd and 54th minutes, both by senior M Alyssa Lapp, following three straight saves from Hatzikonstantis. Maiello fed Lapp for her first goal when she crossed from the right flank, which Lapp converted from just inside the top of the box.

St. Bonaventure scored its third goal on a similar play with Lapp the beneficiary of too much space in the midfield for the goal.

St. Bonaventure outshot UMass Lowell 23-7 overall and 7-3 on frame. Hatzikonstantis had seven saves while Sarokon stopped two shots.
