Softball: UMass Lowell Falls to Southern Connecticut, 12-3, in Second Round of NE-10 Tournament

UMass Lowell held an early lead, but Southern Connecticut’s six-run seventh inning was too much for the River Hawks as UMass Lowell fell 12-3 in the second round of the NE-10 Tournament

Box Score

UMass Lowell took a 3-1 lead into the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough as the River Hawks fell to the Owls 12-3 in the second round of the Northeast-10 Tournament in Manchester, N.H. on Thursday afternoon.

UMass Lowell had the bats going early. Senior Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) led off the UMass Lowell first with a base hit to right field and after a walk to sophomore Ariana Darcy (Wallkill, N.Y.); sophomore Abby Jamieson (Billerica, Mass.) drove in two runs with a single through the right side of the infield, giving the River Hawks an early 2-0 lead.

Southern Connecticut threatened in the top of the second inning, but with the bases loaded and two outs, Brittany Bucko was robbed of an RBI base hit when junior Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) snared a hard line drive to the hot corner that preserved the 2-0 River Hawk lead.

Still leading 2-0 in the top of the fourth, Handley pitched herself out of another tight stop when she got Brittany Bucko to fly out to right with two outs and runners on first and second.

The River Hawks added a run in the bottom of the fourth when Kathryn Donovan (Hudson, N.H.) stole second and the throw down sailed into center field, allowing a third UMass Lowell run to cross the plate.

Southern Connecticut got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Alyssa Downs took a Marielle Handley offering over the fence in left field for a solo home run. The blast cut the UMass Lowell lead to 3-1.

After a two-RBI double by Brittany Bucko tied the game at three in the sixth, Alyssa Downs came to plate with two on and two outs. Once again, Downs came through for the Owls as she launched a go-ahead three-run home run over the fence in right field to put Southern Connecticut on top 6-3.

The Owls broke the game open in the top of the seventh, plating six runs in the frame to solidify the playoff victory.

Marielle Handley took the loss for UMass Lowell. Handley pitched six and one third innings and allowed eight runs on 11 hits while striking out one.

Yesenia Evaristo picked up the win for the Owls. Evaristo tossed three and two thirds innings and allowed no runs on three hits while striking  out two.
