Sixth win in last seven for River Hawks; Key series with SNHU next
Junior pitcher Mike Calzetta (Lawrence, Mass.) yielded just three hits while sophomore 2B Matt Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.) batted 2 for 5 to lead UMass Lowell over Dominican College, 9-1, Friday night in a non-conference baseball clash at LeLacheur Park.
The win was UMass Lowell's sixth in its last seven games as it improved to 26-16 overall entering a key three-game series at home against Southern New Hampshire Saturday (12:00, 3:00) and Sunday (1:00).
Dominican slipped to 22-17 and visits Bloomfield College Saturday at 12:00.
Calzetta struck out six batters over eight innings to improve to 4-1 while Sanchez scored one run and drove in another.
UMass Lowell scored five unearned runs on four Dominican errors and jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings. The River Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the second inning behind an RBI single by sophomore C Sam Johnson (Wakefield, R.I.) while freshman RF Joe Consolmagno (Worcester, Mass.) later drew a walk with the bases loaded.
The River Hawks added three more runs in the third inning when freshman DH Matt Mottola (Newburyport, Mass.) reached on an error to score sophomore 1B Jimmy Ricoy (Lowell, Mass.) and senior LF Patrick Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.). Mottola later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore CF Geoff DeGroot (Wesley Chapel, Fla.).
Mottola also fueled a four-run fourth inning with a two-run triple while Sanchez added an RBI single and Johnson a sacrifice fly.
Dominican pulled a run back in the sixth inning when freshman RF Carlos Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score freshman 2B Dylan Ebel.
