UMass Lowell Makes it Eight in a Row with 6-3 Win over Merrimack

UMass Lowell trailed early, but came from behind notch its eighth straight victory with a 6-3 win over Merrimack College.

Senior Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) came through with a two-run single to cap a four-run third inning as UMass Lowell defeated Merrimack College 6-3 on Monday afternoon.
 
The win brought UMass Lowell to 23-18 overall on the season and 13-3 in the Northeast Division of the Northeast-10 Conference.
 
The loss dropped Merrimack to 17-18 overall on the season and 8-6 in the Northeast Division of the Northeast-10 Conference.
 
In the first inning, UMass Lowell fell behind 3-0 when Keaira Monet Perry launched a three-run homerun over the right-center field fence.
 
The 3-0 lead would stand until the top of the third inning when UMass got the offense going and erased the three-run deficit.
 
With the bases loaded, senior Brianna Mahoney (Billerica, Mass.) singled to center field, scoring sophomore Ariana Darcy (Wallkill, N.Y.) and junior Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.).
 
Later in the third, Krista MacKenzie laced a single through the infield, scoring two more runs for UMass Lowell. The two-RBI single gave UMass Lowell a 4-3 lead.
 
In the fifth inning, UMass Lowell added some insurance when MacKenzie once again came through for the River Hawk, this time with a two-RBI double to center field that increased UMass Lowell's lead to 6-3.

MacKenzie finished the game with three hits, a walk and four RBI.
 
Freshman Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) picked up the win for the River Hawks. Handley improved to 17-12 on the season as she pitched seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits while striking out five.
 
Kelli Jo Deardorff took the loss for Merrimack. She pitched four and two-thirds innings and allowed two runs on five hits.
