Abby Jamieson (Billerica, Mass.) had two hits and an RBI and sophomore
Ariana Darcy (Walkill, N.Y.) laced her fifth triple of the season, but it wasn't enough as UMass Lowell fell to Stonehill, 5-3, on Tuesday afternoon in Easton, Mass.
The loss dropped UMass Lowell to 10-15 overall on the season and 4-2 in the Northeast Division of the Northeast-10 Conference.
Stonehill improved its record to 13-14 with the victory and now stands at 4-1 in the NE-10's Northeast Division.
UMass Lowell took an early 1-0 lead when
Abby Jamieson laced a two out RBI single through the left side of the infield that scored senior
Krista McKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.)
Jamieson was two for three on the game and raised her season batting average to a team-high .558 (29-52).
Unfortunately, the River Hawk lead would be short lived.
In the home half of the first, Stonehill responded with two runs, plating the first on an RBI double and the second as the result of a wild pitch.
The game would remain 2-1 until the bottom of the third inning.
After freshman
Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) recorded two quick outs, the Skyhawks were able to draw back-to-back walks which set the stage for junior Lindsay McKillop.
McKillop came through in the clutch, ripping a three run homerun to center that scored three runs for Stonehill. The three run shot increased the Skyhawk lead to 5-1.
Still, UMass Lowell refused to go down without a fight.
With the score still 5-1 in the top of the sixth; junior
Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) ripped an RBI single to center field, cutting the lead to 5-2.
The River Hawks would draw one run closer when sophomore
Melissa King (Stamford, Conn.) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, but could not manufacture any more offense, going down 1-2-3 in the seventh.
Marielle Handley took the loss for UMass Lowell. The freshman pitched three and a third innings and allowed all five of Stonehill's runs on four hits and three walks.
Sophomore
Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.) pitched well in relief for the River Hawks, tossing two and two thirds scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out one.
Megan Ruonavaara picked up the win for Stonehill. The freshman pitched all seven innings and allowed just three runs while scattering eight hits.
