Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) led the River Hawks with five hits and four RBI as UMass Lowell took game one of Saturday's double-header with Saint Anselm, 9-6 at River View Field in Lowell, Mass.
UMass Lowell got the offense going early. In the top of the first inning, the River Hawks scored the game's first run when sophomore
Ariana Darcy (Wallkill, N.Y.) laced a double to deep right field.
Krista MacKenzie came around to score on the hit.
Two batters later, junior
Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) plated Darcy with a single to right field, extending the lead to 2-0.
The River Hawks broke the game open in the seventh inning when MacKenzie singled through the right side, scoring freshman
Brianna Martin (Methuen, Mass.) and senior
Brianna Mahoney (Billerica, Mass.).
Trailing 9-0 in the last of the seventh, Saint Anselm came storming back. After cutting the lead to 9-4, Julie LeClair smoked a two-run homerun over the fence in left field, narrowing the lead to 9-6.
However, UMass Lowell held the Hawks to six in the seventh, and escaped with the 9-6 win.
Freshman
Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) picked up the win for UMass Lowell. Handley pitched seven innings and allowed just one run on seven hits.
Tayla Trask took the loss for the Hawks. Trask tossed seven innings and allowed nine runs on 16 hits while striking out six.
In game two,
Krista MacKenzie tallied three more hits, but it wasn't enough as UMass Lowell dropped game two of Saturday's double-header with Saint Anselm, 4-2.
UMass Lowell jumped ahead in the first inning when sophomore
Abby Jamieson (Billerica, Mass.) singled to center field, giving the River Hawks a 1-0 advantage.
Saint Anselm responded with two runs in the home half of the third when Nicole Boucher drilled a two-run homerun to center field, giving the Hawks a 2-1 lead.
UMass Lowell would tie the game at two on a Briana Mahoney double, but Saint Anselm pulled ahead for good in the fourth when Hannah Byrne singled to center, scoring teammate Olivia Story.
Sophomore
Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.) took the loss for the River Hawks. Lanfranchi pitched three and two thirds innings and allowed four runs on seven hits.
Paige Cormier picked up the win for the Hawks. The sophomore tossed seven innings and allowed two runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out one.
