UMass Lowell trailed heading into the eighth inning, but three runs in the eighth and another in the ninth were enough to lead the River Hawks over Dominican

Sophomore Matthew Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.) came through with a huge 2 RBI single in the eighth inning as the River Hawks defeated Dominican College 4-2 on Thursday afternoon in Orangeburg, N.Y.

The victory moved UMass Lowell to 18-12-1 overall on the season. The River Hawks remain at 1-3-1 in the Northeast-10.

The loss dropped Dominican to 15-12 overall.

Heading into the eighth inning, the River Hawks trailed the Chargers 2-0.

However, after two walks and a sacrifice bunt, Matthew Sanchez ripped a single through the left side, plating two for the River Hawks and tying the game at two.

Sanchez finished the game 2-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored.

Two batters later, sophomore Jimmy Ricoy (Lowell, Mass.) put the River Hawks on top with a sac fly to left field. Sanchez scored on the Ricoy sacrifice.

UMass Lowell added an insurance run in the ninth when sophomore Geoff DeGroot (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) singled to right field, plating freshman Louis Tarantino (Nashua, N.H.) and giving the River Hawks a 4-2 lead.

The River Hawks used a total of eight pitchers in the game. Senior Mike Sloban (Merrimac, Mass.) picked up the win for the River Hawks. Sloban pitched a perfect seventh before the River Hawks took the lead in the eighth.

Carlos Lopez took the loss for Dominican. Lopez pitched two innings and allowed three runs on five hits and two walks.

Senior Tyler Toyfair (Agawam, Mass.) picked up a save for the River Hawks. Toyfair tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to ensure the victory for UMass Lowell.
