Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) pitched well, but the River Hawks couldn't get its offense going as UMass Lowell fell to Merrimack, 2-1, in the first game of Monday's Northeast-10 double-header at River View Field in Lowell, Mass.
The loss dropped UMass Lowell to 9-14 overall on the season and 3-1 in the NE-10.
With the win, Merrimack improved its record to 6-9 overall on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
Leading 1-0 in the third inning, Merrimack senior Tawny Palmieri slapped a ground ball to shortstop. Palmieri was thrown out at first on the play, but junior Jessica Fugazzotta scored from third extending the Warrior lead to 2-0.
UMass Lowell finally got the bats going in the home half of the seventh inning; scoring a run on an RBI double to center field by sophomore
Abby Jamieson (Billerica, Mass.) that cut the lead to 2-1.
With the tying run on second base, Merrimack pitcher Ashley Perry got junior
Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) to line out to center and sophomore
Kate Donovan (Hudson, N.H.) to strike out swinging, ending the game.
Valerie Bauer picked up the win for Merrimack. The right-hander threw six and two thirds innings and allowed just one run on two hits. Bauer struck out two River Hawks.
Ashley Perry was credited with a save.
Marielle Handley took a tough loss for the River Hawks. The freshman pitched six and a third innings and allowed two runs on six hits. Handley struck out seven and didn't walk a single batter.
Sophomore
Ariana Dacy (Wallkill, N.Y.) had two triples and two RBI as a part of a ten run output that saw UMass Lowell defeat Merrimack 10-0 in the second game of Monday's NE-10 double-header.
The win brought UMass Lowell to 10-14 overall on the season and 4-1 in the Northeast-10.
The loss dropped Merrimack to 6-10 overall on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
After being held to just two hits in game one, the UMass Lowell offense exploded for 10 runs on 10 hits in the second game.
In the first inning, sophomore
Abby Jamieson (Billerica, Mass.) came to the plate with the bases loaded and ripped a bases-clearing double to give UMass Lowell an early 3-0 lead.
One batter later, UMass Lowell extended its lead to 5-0 when junior
Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) hit her third home run in the past four days.
Ariana Darcy was also hot at the plate. The sophomore outfielder laced two triples, each of which plated a run for UMass Lowell.
Freshman

Alexis Perry took the loss for Merrimack. Perry was not able to record an out as she allowed five runs in the first inning on three hits and a walk.
