Softball: River Hawks Complete Sweep of Franklin Pierce With Pair of Wins

UMass Lowell swept Franklin Pierce for the second consecutive day with wins in both ends of Saturday’s double-header, 9-1 and 6-2 finals.

Junior Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) had three hits and an RBI, and freshman Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) picked up the win as UMass Lowell took the first game in Saturday's double-header with Franklin Pierce, 9-1 in six innings.
 
The win brought UMass Lowell to 8-13 overall on the season and 3-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
 
The loss dropped Franklin Pierce to 2-7 overall on the year and 0-3 in the NE-10.
 
The River Hawks got the scoring going in the second inning when Handley helped out her own cause with an RBI infield single. Ferraro scored on the play after leading off the inning with a double.
 
UMass Lowell added another run in the second and two more in the fifth before breaking the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning.
 
Leading 4-1, the River Hawks loaded the bases on three consecutive singles. Sophomore Ally Greene (Tewksbury, Mass.) then cleared the bases with a 3-RBI double to deep right field extending the River Hawk lead to 8-1.
 
Two batters later, Ferraro ended the game with an RBI single to left field, giving the River Hawks a 9-1 victory after six innings.
 
Handley picked up her fifth win of the season. The freshman threw six innings and allowed just one run on six hits. Handley struck out five Ravens.
 
Tricia Hansen took the loss for Franklin Pierce. Hansen pitched four and two thirds innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits.
 
Sophomore Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.) got the start in the second game of the double-header and did not disappoint as UMass Lowell defeated Franklin Pierce 6-2.
 
The win brought UMass Lowell to 9-13 overall on the season.

The River Hawks got the offense going in the first inning when sophomore Abby Jamieson (Billerica, Mass.) knocked in the game's first run with an RBI single.
 
UMass Lowell added two more runs in the inning on a 2-RBI single by sophomore Danielle Crutcher (Londonderry, N.H.).
 
Franklin Pierce chipped away at the lead in the third inning, scoring a run on an RBI single by Tricia Hansen. However, the River Hawks responded in the fourth when sophomore Ariana Darcy (Walkil, N.Y.) ripped an inside the park homerun to deep left center field.
 
Darcy's hit scored two runs and gave the River Hawks a 5-1 lead.
 
Lanfranchi picked up her third win of the year for UMass Lowell. The right hander pitched a complete game, allowing just two runs (one earned) on four hits.

The win marked the 100th victory for UMass Lowell  head coach, Sean Cotter.
