Sophomore
Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) tossed her third consecutive complete game as UMass Lowell took game one of Friday's Northeast-10 conference double-header with Franklin Pierce University, 7-1.
With the win, UMass Lowell improved to 6-13 on the season and 1-0 in the Northeast-10. The victory was the third in a row for the River Hawks.
Franklin Pierce fell to 2-5 overall with the loss and 0-1 in conference play.
UMass Lowell brought the bats early as the River Hawks posted three runs in the home half of the first inning.
With the bases loaded and one out, junior
Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) plated the first run of the game with a single to left field.
The very next batter was sophomore
Kate Donovan (Hudson, N.H.). Donovan batted in two more River Hawks with a double to right center field. Sophomore
Ariana Darcy (Walkill, N.Y.) and sophomore
Ally Greene (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored on the extra base hit.
UMass Lowell added runs in the second, third and fifth innings, including a home run from Ferraro, but the story of the afternoon was Handley.
The right hander tossed seven innings and allowed only one run on one hit. Handley struck out six Ravens.
With the win, Handley improved to 4-9 on the season.
Rachel Allen took the loss for Franklin Pierce.
In game two,
Marielle Handley once again got the start for the River Hawks, but this time picked up a save as UMass Lowell defeated Franklin Pierce, 4-2, to complete the sweep of Friday's double-header.
With the win, UMass Lowell improved to 7-13 on the season and 2-0 in NE-10 play.
The loss dropped Franklin Pierce to 2-6 on the year and 0-2 in the NE-10.
Franklin Pierce got on the board in the top of the first after an RBI single by freshman Sam Connors.
The game would remain 1-0 until the UMass Lowell bats came to life in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out and two runners on,
Ali Ferraro belted her second homerun of the day, this time it was a three-run shot that put UMass Lowell ahead for good.
Freshman
Hailey Terrien (Rochdale, Mass.) picked up the win for the River Hawks. Terrien pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just four hits.
Handley picked up her first save of the season.
Tricia Hansen took the loss for Franklin Pierce. The freshman tossed six innings and allowed four runs on ten hits.
