Freshman
Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) notched her second complete game shutout of the day and senior
Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) scored all three runs as UMass Lowell came away with a 3-0 victory in the back end of a double-header with Saint Rose on Tuesday afternoon.
The win brought UMass Lowell to 5-13 overall. The River Hawks will play a double-header with Franklin Pierce on Friday (2:30, 4:30).
Saint Rose fell to 2-10 on the season.
The River Hawks wasted no time jumping on the score board, plating the games first run in the top of the first inning.
MacKenzie led off the inning with a walk. After a groundout and a stolen base, MacKenzie scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Abby Jamieson (Billerica, Mass.).
In the third inning, MacKenzie and Jamieson paired up once again to plate UMass Lowell's second run of the evening. With one out, MacKenzie singled to right field. Two batters later, Jamieson ripped a single to center and MacKenzie scored from third.
Leading 2-0 in the fifth inning, sophomore
Ariana Darcy (Wallkill, N.Y.) brought MacKenzie home for the third time when she singled to right.
The three runs would be plenty for Handley. The freshman tossed her second shutout of the day as she went all seven innings, allowing just three hits and striking out four. Handley also surrendered one walk.
Ashlee Frazier took the loss for Saint Rose. Frazier pitched three and a third innings while giving up three hits and two earned runs. Frazier struggled with her control, walking for River Hawk batters.
