Softball: UMass Lowell Takes Down Saint Rose, 2-0, In Pitcher’s Duel

Marielle Handley tossed seven scoreless innings as the River Hawks took down Saint Rose, 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon

Box Score

Freshman Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) dominated on the mound, tossing seven scoreless innings while racking up 11 strikeouts as UMass Lowell came away with a 2-0 victory in the first game of a double-header with Saint Rose on Tuesday afternoon.

The win brought UMass Lowell to 4-13 overall. The River Hawks will play Saint Rose again at 5:00PM tonight.

Saint Rose fell to 2-9 on the season.

Handley controlled the game for the River Hawks, but she got some help from her offense in the third inning.

After reaching on an error to begin the inning, freshman Brianna Martin (Methuen, Mass.) promptly stole second base. Martin advanced to third on a fly ball to left field and eventually scored when sophomore Ally Greene (Tewksbury, Mass.) reached on another error.

With two outs in the inning, sophomore Abby Jamieson (Billerica, Mass.) ripped a double to left. Greene scored on the double and increased the UMass Lowell lead to 2-0.

Other than that, the UMass Lowell offense was relatively quiet, managing only three hits in the game. Along with Jamieson's double, senior Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) and sophomore Kathryn Donovan each had hits in the game.

Fortunately for UMass Lowell, Handley didn't need much offense. The River Hawk ace cruised through the rest of the contest, allowing only four hits and one walk. Handley struck out 11 batters in her seven innings of work.

Nicole Wickham took the loss for Saint Rose. Wickham went seven innings and allowed two unearned runs on three hits. She struck out five River Hawks in the game and didn't allow a single walk.
