River Hawks Suffer Sweep at Adelphi, 5-3, 1-0

Sophomore 3B Victoria Wink batted 4 for 7 with two RBI as Adelphi University defeated UMass Lowell, 5-3 and 1-0, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference softball doubleheader in Garden City, N.Y.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 2-6 overall entering its Monday, Mar. 11 twin bill at Post University. Adelphi improved to 2-0.

In the opener, Wink batted 3 for 4 with two RBI as Adelphi jumped out to a 3-0 lead after four innings. UMass Lowell trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the fifth when freshman RF Brianna Martin (Methuen, Mass.) scored when sophomore LF Ally Greene (Tewksbury, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice. Martin followed right after on an error.

Wink gave Adelphi a 4-2 edge with a solo home run in the bottom half of the fifth. Sophomore RF Jaclyn Binstock then singled and scored on a double by junior 1B Katie Andrews.

UMass Lowell pulled another back when Martin scored as sophomore CF Ariana Darcy (Walkill, N.Y.) reached on an error, but could get no closer.

Martin batted 2 for 3 with two runs to lead UMass Lowell. Sophomore P Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.) took the loss as she scattered five hits, three runs (one earned) and a walk over 3.1 innings to slip to 1-1.

Senior P Devon Kelly improved to 1-0 for Adelphi as she allowed six hits, three runs (none earned) and a walk while striking out five.

In the nightcap, senior CF Emily Dorko reached on a leadoff single in the third inning, stole second and reached home when senior C Meghan Heiser singled to centerfield for the game's only run.

The loss spoiled a solid outing for freshman P Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) who allowed four hits, an earned run and two walks while striking out four to slip to 0-4.

Senior P Lauren Watts surrendered only two hits and struck out eight in her first win.
