Kutztown Too Much for UMass Lowell in 6-2 Loss

Loss spoils Jamieson’s 3 for 3, two-run effort

Kutztown University compiled 16 hits as it defeated UMass Lowell, 6-2, Sunday morning in at the West Virginia Wesleyan University Softball Tournament at the Moyer Complex.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 3-12 entering Saturday's final game against Indiana (Pa.), slated for 1:00. The River Hawks open their Northeast-10 Conference schedule Tuesday at home (weather permitting) against Merrimack in a single game at 4:00.

Kutztown, selected to win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division, improved to 9-2.

The loss spoiled another solid effort for sophomore Abby Jamieson (Billerica, Mass.), who batted 3 for 3 with two runs and one RBI. Senior RF Brianna Mahoney (Billerica, Mass.) went 2 for 3 with one RBI while sophomore 1B Kathryn Donovan (Hudson, N.H.) went 1 for 2 with a walk.

Freshman Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) took the loss and slipped to 1-8. Handley surrendered nine hits, four earned runs and three walks. Freshman Anna Crowley (Eastchester, N.Y.) went the final three innings and allowed three hits, no walks or runs.

Sophomore P Dominique Ficara earned the win for Kutztown, allowing six hits, two earned runs and a walk while striking out seven.

The Bears led 2-0 entering the bottom half of the second inning when Jamieson led off with a single and later reached home on an RBI single by Mahoney to cut the lead in half.

Kutztown, however, added one run in the third on an RBI single by junior 2B Morgan Booth; and two more in the fourth behind a two-run home run by junior 1B Colleen Smith for a 5-1 lead.

UMass Lowell pulled a run back in the bottom of the fourth when Jamieson led off with a solo shot to left center, but the Bears added a sixth run in the fifth inning when Booth scored on a sacrifice fly from senior LF Maria Isgro.
