Indiana (Pa.) Turns Back UMass Lowell, 7-5

King drives in three runs; River Hawks host Merrimack Tuesday

Indiana (Pa.) University overcame a 4-0 deficit to defeat UMass Lowell, 7-5, Sunday afternoon in the West Virginia Wesleyan Softball Tournament at the Moyer Complex.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 3-13 and opens Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division play Tuesday at home against Merrimack (4:00).

IUP improved to 4-3.

The loss dimmed a stellar effort from sophomore C Melissa King (Stamford, Conn.) who batted 2 for 3 with a two-run home run in the second inning while junior 3B Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) went 1 for 4 with a lead-off solo home run in the third, which gave the River Hawks a 4-0 lead.

Senior Brianna Mahoney (Billerica, Mass.) went 1 for 2 with a run.
IUP battled back, however, in the bottom half of the third when senior DH Stef Poates hit a three-run home run to centerfield.

Mahoney, led off the fourth inning with a double, advanced to third and scored on a sacrifice fly by King to give UMass Lowell a 5-3 lead.

The Crimson Hawks came back with four runs in the fifth inning, led by a sacrifice fly by sophomore LF Kaylee Prendergast and a three-run shot by senior RF Jen Beaver.

Freshman P Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) took the loss as she allowed seven earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out one over 4.2 innings. Sophomore P Alexa Campbell earned the win as she allowed one hit over the final two innings after replacing freshman Tara Senn.
