Fourth Inning Outburst Lifts Bloomsburg Over UMass Lowell, 7-1

Bloomsburg University rallied for seven runs in the fourth inning to turn back UMass Lowell, 7-1, Saturday morning at the West Virginia Wesleyan Softball Tournament in Salem, Va.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 3-10 overall and meets Lock Haven Saturday at 1:00. The River Hawks cap the tournament Sunday with games against Kutztown (9:00) and Indiana (Pa., 11:00).

Bloomsburg, selected to finish tops in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Central Division, improved to 3-1.

Freshman LF Anna Crowley (Eastchester, N.Y.) led UMass Lowell, hitting 2 for 3 with one run. Freshman P Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) took the loss as she allowed eight hits, seven runs and no walks while striking out three over 3.2 innings. Sophomore P Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.) came on for the final 2.1 inning and allowed two hits and no walks while striking out two.

Sophomore P Caitlin O'Brien earned the win for Bloomsburg as she yielded four hits, one earned run and a walk while striking out three.

Junior 2B Mandy Baer led the Huskies, hitting 2 for 3 with one RBI while freshman C Cheyanne Bates went 2 for 2 with a run.

UMass Lowell took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Crowley doubled, advanced to third on a single by freshman RF Brianna Martin (Methuen, Mass.) and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by senior 2B Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.).

Bloomsburg, however, scored all seven runs in the fourth inning, led by a three-run home run by junior SS Chrissy Belko followed by a solo shot by freshman LF Erika Yenora. The Huskies also added an RBI triple from senior CF Raychelle Kuhns and an RBI single from junior 2B Mandy Baer.

UMass Lowell put two runners on with one out in the seventh, but could not get any closer.
