First-Inning Flurry Lifts Lock Haven Over UMass Lowell, 5-1

Lock Haven University scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 5-1 victory over UMass Lowell Saturday afternoon at the West Virginia Wesleyan Softball Tournament at the Moyer Complex.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 3-11 overall and caps the Tournament Sunday against Kutztown (9:00) and Indiana (Pa., 11:00).

Lock Haven, selected to finish second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division, improved to 8-1.

UMass Lowell was held the just three hits, led by sophomore SS Kathryn Donovan (Hudson, N.H.), who batted 1 for 3 and singled home junior 3B Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) in the seventh inning for UMass Lowell's sole run.

Sophomore P Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.) took the loss as she went the first 2/3 of the first inning and surrendered four runs on six hits. Freshman P Hailey Terrien (Rochdale, Mass.) went 4.2 innings and surrendered one hit, one earned run and a walk while striking out one.

Senior 3B Bridget Clarke opened the rally with a solo home run to right field while junior 1B Chelsea Edwards followed with a two-run shot two batters later to highlight the inning.

Lock Haven added a fifth run in the second inning on an RBI single by Edwards, who went 2 for 3 on the day to lead the Bald Eagles.

Senior P Brianna Jennings went the distance, allowing three hits, an unearned run and no walks while striking out three.
