Sophomore DH Abby Jamieson (Billerica, Mass.) batted 4 for 4 with five RBI and freshman P Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) earned her first victory as UMass Lowell defeated Edinboro University, 10-6, Friday in the West Virginia Wesleyan Softball Tournament.

The victory halted a five-game losing skid for UMass Lowell, which improved to 3-8 entering Friday's second game against Shippensburg University (1:00).

Edinboro slipped to 0-1.

Sophomore CF Ariana Darcy (Walkill, N.Y.) batted 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs while senior 2B Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) went 2 for 3 with two runs and one RBI. Freshman RF Brianna Martin (Methuen, Mass.) hit 1 for 2 with two runs.

After a share of hard-luck losses this season, Handley allowed five hits, no earned runs and three walks while striking out a season-high 12 to improve to 1-6.

UMass Lowell jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed, although Edinboro erupted for six runs in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 8-6. Jamieson ignited the first inning rally with an RBI single up the middle while sophomore 1B Daniele Crutcher (Londonderry, N.H.) later followed with a two-run triple.

Jamieson also belted a solo shot in the third inning and hit an RBI single in the fourth for a 5-0 cushion. In the fifth inning, Darcy ripped a two-run triple to right center and later scored on a double by MacKenzie.

Despite two out, the Fighting Scots capitalized on an error with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth, and senior C Ashley Black followed with a grand slam.

Jamieson, however, sealed the win with a two-run single in the seventh to cap the scoring.

Senior SS Marissa Pullo led Edinboro, hitting 2 for 4 with a run. Senior P Amanda Shields took the loss to slip to 0-1, scattering 11 hits, eight earned runs and two walks while striking out one.
