UMass Lowell Falls to Saint Michael’s, 81-70

Antonio Bivins had 15 points and six rebounds, but the River Hawks still came up short, falling to Saint Michael’s, 81-70.

Junior F Antonio Bivins (Miami, Fla.) led UMass Lowell with 15 points, six rebounds and two steals, but it wasn't enough as UMass Lowell fell to Saint Michael's, 81-70, in a conference game in Colchester, Vermont on Wednesday night.
 
The loss brings UMass Lowell to 13-7 overall and 9-7 in conference play. The River Hawks will host Southern New Hampshire on Saturday, February 9 (4:00).
 
Saint Michael's improves to 6-14 overall on the season and 3-13 in the Northeast-10. The Purple Knights will travel to Franklin Pierce on Saturday, February 9 (3:30).
 
Leading, 6-3, early in the fist half, UMass Lowell watched its lead slip away as Saint Michael's went on a 12-0 scoring run, highlighted by six points from Corey Crawford II. Crawford II finished with 11 points and six rebounds.
 
The Purple Knights would extend the lead to, 32-19, with just over 5 minutes remaining in the first half.
 
UMass Lowell was able to cut the Saint Michael's lead to, 32-31, before half time when senior G Akeem Williams (Brockton, Mass.) knocked down a jump shot with just two seconds remaining. Williams finished the game with 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.
 
Also active in the scoring for UMass Lowell was freshman F Kennedy Chukwuocha (Willingboro, N.J.) with 12 points on 2-3 shooting from three-point range and freshman G Carlos Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) with 10 points and four rebounds.
 
The River Hawks came out hot in the second half, scoring the first six points and taking a, 38-32, lead with just under 18 minutes remaining in the game.
 
However, the Purple Knights came storming back and took the lead for good when Derek Knutty drove strong to the hoop for a layup and the foul. Knutty finished with a game-high 21 points and 14 rebounds.

"Saint Michael's played a great game and we were a step slow all night," said UMass Lowell head coach Greg Herenda "They seemed to make every big shot."

"I'm really happy that Carlos and Mark came off the bench and gave us a big lift, but it just was not our night. We had a second half lead but we did not finish the job," he added.

Sophomore G Mark Cornelius (Westford, Mass.) came off the bench and converted a three point play down the stretch.
 
Also reaching double-figures for Saint Michael's were Dom Ditlefsen with 16, James Cambronne with 12 and Greg Grippo with 11. Grippo also had eight assists on the night.  

Saint Michael's outshot UMass Lowell, 52.6% (30-57) to 38.8% (26-67). The Purple Knights also outscored the River Hawks in the paint, 34-22.
 
UMass Lowell's bench outscored the Purple Knight bench, 37-31.
