Box Score
Senior F Joey Diamond scored the game-winning goal with 1:01 remaining in overtime as the University of Maine defeated No. 12/13 UMass Lowell, 4-3, Sunday afternoon in a Hockey East clash in front of 4,022 at the Harold Alfond Arena.

The loss was the second straight for UMass Lowell which slipped to 14-9-2 overall and 8-8-2 in Hockey East (sixth place) entering Friday's clash at No. 5/5 Boston College (broadcast on NESN, 7:00).

The River Hawks have played to overtime in three of their last four games.

Maine, which had gone 0-4-4 at home prior to the game, improved to 8-14-5 overall and 4-9-5 in Hockey East and slides into eighth place.

UMass Lowell, which outshot Maine 38-29 overall, pressured well in the overtime and outshot the Black Bears 7-3.

Maine, however, scored the winner when Diamond intercepted an errant puck deep in the UMass Lowell zone and wristed past junior G Doug Carr (Hanover, Mass.) from the left side of the slot.

Moments before, Maine goalkeeper Martin Ouellette denied UMass Lowell a golden 2 on1 opportunity. Junior Joe Pendenza (Wilmington, Mass.) drove down the right side and crossed to junior F Josh Holmstrom (Colorado Springs, Colo.), but Ouellette read the play well and shifted to his right to snuff the attempt.

Carr had 25 saves while Ouellette stopped 35 shots for Maine.

Both teams scored two power play goals apiece as UMass Lowell was 2 for 3 and Maine 2-5. Entering the weekend, Maine's power play conversion was 8.9 percent and was 1-33 entering the weekend, but went 3-9 in its 2-2 draw at Providence Friday and in Sunday's game.

The game featured four goals scored in quick succession. Maine opened the scoring 9:50 into the first period when Diamond was given space at the point, faked and meandered his way to the left of the cage where he wristed home.

The lead lasted all of 14 seconds before freshman F Michael Fallon (Glenview, Ill.) leveled with the first goal of his career. Fallon possessed the rebound of a shot by sophomore F Terrence Wallin (Yardley, Pa.) and shoveled home while on the ice.

UMass Lowell went ahead 2-1 on a power play 7:53 into the second when Ouellette stopped a McGrath shot and lost his stick. Senior F Riley Wetmore (Swanton, Vt.) was there for the rebound and calmly converted into the unprotected left side of the goal.

Maine, however, capitalized at 13:23 five seconds into a UMass Lowell penalty when freshman Ryan Lomberg converted the rebound off a saved attempt by sophomore D Jake Rutt.

Maine survived a 5 on 3 situation for 1:35 roughly three quarters through the period, but McGrath was gifted the rebound on the right side off a saved shot by sophomore Zack Kamrass (Atlanta, Ga.), which he slotted home for a 3-2 lead at 16:08.

The Black Bears evened matters 40 seconds later, 3-3, on a power play when Rutt struck from the left point.
