UMass Lowell Drops Regular Season Finale to Bentley, 100-70

Bianca Simmons set a new career high in points with 45, but it wasn’t enough as Bentley defeated UMass Lowell, 100-70, in the Northeast-10 regular season finale.

Box Score

Senior G Bianca Simmons (Middletown, Conn.) set a new career high with 45 points, but UMass Lowell fell to Bentley University, 100-70, in the Northeast-10 regular season finale in Waltham, Mass.

Simmons' 45-point performance is the second highest single game scoring output in school history. She fell just three points shy of tying the UMass Lowell record of 48, set by Darlene Orlando Ciarcia on Feb. 7, 1994.

The loss brings UMass Lowell's final regular season record to 18-8 overall and 15-7 in conference play.

Bentley ends the regular season with a 25-1 overall record and a 21-1 mark in the Northeast-10.

UMass Lowell fell behind early as Bentley opened the game on a 15-5 run. Six points from junior Lauren Battista fueled the run for the Falcons.

Battista finished the game with 18 points and three rebounds.

Battista wasn't the only one scoring for Bentley. Senior Courtney Finn led all Falcons with 21 points, junior Kelsey Roberson netted 18 points and freshman Jane White added 14 points.

"We tried a new defensive approach and it didn't work," said UMass Lowell head coach, Sarah Behn. "So now I know."

Bentley extended its lead to 22 before the end of the first half, but on the final possession of the half, Simmons knocked down a buzzer beating three-pointer that brought the score to 49-30.

UMass Lowell came out hot in the second half. Bianca Simmons and senior F Whitney Wilson (Lowell, Mass.) led the River Hawks during a 12-3 run which cut the Bentley lead to 54-42.

Wilson finished with six points and six rebounds. Senior G Ashley Rivera (Lowell, Mass.) also chipped in with seven points.

"It's too bad a few more kids didn't contribute in the scoring category," Behn added. "Bianca was truly amazing. Bentley proved why they are number one the country."

UMass Lowell's run would be short-lived, however, as Bentley responded by stroking four consecutive three-pointers which brought the lead back up to 20.

UMass Lowell shot 38% (27-71) while Bentley shot 56% (35-63). However, the biggest discrepancy came from beyond the arc where the Falcons shot 47% (14-30) to the River Hawks' 25% (6-24).
