Box Score
Catawba College scored two runs in the first inning and one in the second and never looked back in defeating UMass Lowell, 5-1, Monday afternoon in the Catawba College Softball Tournament at Community Park.
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 1-3 overall and meets Pfeiffer University Monday at 2:00. Catawba improved to 11-5.
Sophomore CF
Ariana Darcy (Walkill, N.Y.) led UMass Lowell, hitting 1 for 3 with one RBI while senior 2B
Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) batted 1 for 2 with a walk and a run.
Eight players had one hit each for Catawba, led by freshman pinch-hitter Holly Chandler, who hit a two-run single in the sixth inning in her only at-bat. Freshman DH Morgan Brann and sophomore 3B Emily Huneycutt each went 1 for 2 with one RBI, one walk and a run.
Catawba opened the scoring in the first inning when senior CF Ashley Terry and freshman 2B Gina Gerone hit consecutive RBI doubles. The Indians added a third run in the second inning when Huneycutt hit a solo shot to right center.
UMass Lowell pulled a run back in the fourth inning when MacKenzie walked and sophomore LF
Ally Greene (Tewksbury, Mass.) singled to centerfield. Darcy then singled to center to score MacKenzie.
With runners on second and third with none out, Catawba did well to avoid allowing any more runs and twice threw out UMass Lowell runners at the plate on consecutive fielder's choice situations.
The Indians, however, added two more runs in the sixth, courtesy of Chandler's two-run single.
