Sophomore 1B Maddie Justice drove in the sole run on a seventh-inning single as Shippensburg University defeated UMass Lowell, 1-0, Sunday in the Catawba College Softball Tournament at Community Park.
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 0-2 entering Sunday's second game against Lenoir-Rhyne (5:0). Shippensburg improved to 1-0.
The loss spoiled a solid pitching effort from freshman
Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.), who surrendered five hits, one earned run and no walks whil striking out two as she slipped to 0-2.
Junior P Emily Estep yielded three hits and two walks while striking out seven to improve to 2-0.
Shipensburg broke the drought in the seventh inning when sophomore DH Jessie Trammell opened the inning with a single. Junior Kirstin McClune, pinch running for Trammell, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, then scored on a Justice's single.
UMass Lowell nearly scored in the sixth inning when senior 2B
Krista MacKenzie reached on a bunt single and later advanced to third on a fielder's choice and a groundout, but could get no further.
