No. 18 Stonehill Prevails Over UMass Lowell in a Frenzy, 103-93

Senior G Bianca Simmons (Middletown, Conn.) compiled 35 points and 14 rebounds but it was not enough as Stonehill College defeated UMass Lowell, 103-93, Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball clash at the Merkert Gymnasium.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 16-6 overall and 13-5 in the NE-10, currently third place, entering Saturday's game at Merrimack (1:00).

Stonehill improved to 19-3 overall and 15-3 in the Conference and strengthens its grip on second place, two games ahead of UMass Lowell.

Simmons' output marked her fifth double-double this season and the 10th time in 13 games she eclipsed 30 or more points. She also added five assists while six of her 14 rebounds were offensive. She converted 14 of 15 free throws, but was forced to the sidelines for roughly five minutes in the second half due to a bloody nose.

Senior G Ashley Rivera (Lowell, Mass.) added 20 points.

Junior G Mary Louise Dixon registered a triple-double to lead Stonehill with 19 points, 16 assists and 13 rebounds as she converted all 17 of her free throws. Dixon was one of five players in double digits for Stonehill as sophomore Tori Faieta registered 22 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots while shooting 8 for 13 from the floor.

Junior F Asia Ewing also scored 22 points on 10-18 field goal shooting and grabbed nine rebounds. Sophomore G Amy Pelletier added 17 points and four assists while shooting 7-11 from the field and 3-6 from 3-point range.

Freshman G Paige Marshall chipped in 15 points and four rebounds on 6-7 field goal shooting.
Stonehill was on the mark, shooting a collective .515 from the floor, including .545 in the second half (18-33). UMass Lowell struggled from the field, shooting .330 overall and .340 in the latter half (18-53).

The Skyhawks shooting buffered their 25 turnovers (opposed to only 10 by UMass Lowell). The River Hawks made the most of it, outscoring Stonehill 29-12 off turnovers.

UMass Lowell led 28-26 with 7:40 left in the first half, but Stonehill went on a 15-2 run to post a 41-30 cushion with 2:51 left in the first half. Faieta scored five points in the run while Marshall added four.

Leading 47-38 early in the second half, Stonehill reeled off 14 straight points to take a 61-38 lead with 14:37 to play, from which UMass Lowell was unable to recover. Pelletier and Marshall led the run with a pair of treys each.
