RIVER HAWKS RUN OUT OF GAS, TOPPED BY OLD DOMINION

NORFOLK, VA (Dec. 4, 2013) – On Education Day at Old Dominion in front of a new Lady Monarchs record of 8,086 fans, the River Hawks fell 90-57 at Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, VA.

Junior Shannon Samuels (Windsor, Conn.) led the River Hawks with 16 points, her fourth straight game leading UMass Lowell in points. Samuels also had a team-high five steals. Freshman Kenya Stewart (Hartford, Conn.) had game-high eight boards and six points, fifth straight game of leading the River Hawks in rebounds.

Down 29-16 with 8:06 left in the first half, the River Hawks used a 15-3 run to make it a one point game, 32-31 at the 2:30 mark, topped off by back-to-back layups by Samuels, off of steals. UMass Lowell could not take the lead and went into halftime down just five.

Trailing 38-33 at halftime, the Lady Monarchs shot 57.1% (20-35) from the floor in the second half and the River Hawks struggled shooting just 11.4% (4-35). That led to a 52-24 second half advantage for Old Dominion.

The Lady Monarchs were led by junior Shae Kelley with game-high 26 points and 16 rebounds. Also in double-figures for Old Dominion was senior Becca Allison and sophomore Galaisha Goodhope with 17 and 10 points respectively.

The Lady Monarchs improved to 4-4 and UMass Lowell falls to 0-8. The River Hawks will continue its nine game road trip Saturday when they tip-off with Seton Hall at 2. Old Dominion will host Maryland Eastern Shore also on Saturday at 7.

The River Hawks shot 11-13 from the free throw line, impressive because it was in front thousands of screaming elementary kids. Old Dominion shot just 17-36 from the charity strips.

The Lady Monarchs had the advantage on the boards, out rebounding UMass Lowell 64-37.
