Five Score In Double Figures, River Hawks Trumped By Duquesne

Box Score

Freshman Tyler Livingston (Hudson, N.H.) and senior Parris Massey (Boston, MA) matched and set career-highs, respectively, with the pair combining for 26 points and 13 rebounds as UMass Lowell fell 95-77 to Duquesne.

Three others were in double figures including senior Akeem Williams' (Brockton, Mass.), sophomore DJ Mlachnik (Muskego, Wisc.), and junior Chad Holley (New York, N.Y.).

"Without our students on campus, and to have that many fans to be that energetic, I think thats a testament to our administration but I think its a great sign of things to come and the possibility that exists here for a succesful mens basketball program," said Head Coach Pat Duquette. "We just have to do our part, play better, play harder, keep coaching, keep recruiting. All the ingredients are here with the arena and the fans to build an incredibily succesful basketball program and I believe that today more than I ever have."

Massey scored 13 points, trumping his previous career-high of eight points which he set two games ago against Columbia. The Boston native who came into the game second in the America East in blocks (1.4 bpg) was right on par swatting away two shots and also added a game-high 10 rebounds.

"It's been fun to watch Parris Massey work hard and earn his opportunity and make the most of it," said Duquette. "He's a kid who came in not asking for anything and not expecting much, and has just come to work every day and gotten better and I thought there were times today where he was the best  player on the floor."

The River Hawks (1-11, 0-1 America East) lost their first game playing at the Tsongas Center, having won the previous two over Merrimack with the last win coming in 2011. The win improved Duquesne's record to 5-5 overall without having played any conference games to date.

Duquesne stormed out of the gates, opening an 11-0 lead before Livingston got the River Hawks on the board with a three from the top of the key. The Dukes eventually built their lead to 19-3 before UMass Lowell began chipping at the lead.

The River Hawks continued to fight and claw eventually cutting the deficit to 11 at the half thanks to Mark Cornelius (Westford, Mass.) tipping home a missed three by Holley just as the halftime buzzer sounded. Livingston scored 10 of his 13 in the opening half that included a pair of three's.

The Dukes were unselfish, compiling 27 assists on their 33 made field goals, and finished the game shooting 62.3% from the field while connecting on 13 of the 24 3-pointers they attempted.

Cornelius continued to build on his recent success assisting on five of the 12 baskets the River Hawks made in the first half and finished with seven assists, five points and three rebounds.

Holley, who is second in the league in minutes behind Mlachnik totaled 11 points in 32 minutes highlighted by a scoop shot in the lane which he was fouled on. He would hit the free throw and complete the three-point play that cut the Duquesne lead to 44-33.

After a Massey bucket at the 17:34 mark in the second half, Duquesne would go on a 12-2 run highlighted by a powerful slam by Dominique McKoy leading to a timeout from Duquette.

The loss drops UMass Lowell's record against the Atlantic-10 this season to 0-3 while Duquesne sits at 3-1 against the America East.

Senior Kerry Weldon (New York, N.Y.) gave the 1,758 fans in attendance a highlight to remember in the final minute, intercepting a pass and slamming home a reverse flush, which brought the crowd to their feet.

UMass Lowell will be off until January 5th when they host UMBC at Costello Athletic Center at 1 P.M.
