River Hawks Fall Just Short at Rhode Island, 77-70

KINGSTON, RI (Dec. 10, 2013) – Freshmen Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) had a career-high 18 points but it wasn't enough as UMass Lowell falls 77-70 against Rhode Island Tuesday night at the Ryan Center in Kingston, RI.
 
Hayner shot 6-13 from the floor including 5-12 from three to lead the River Hawks. Junior Jasmine McRoy (Gaithersburg, MD) had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Also in double-figures was freshman Asia Mitchell (Roxbury, Mass.) scoring 10 points.
 
The River Hawks led almost the first half and took a 31-25 lead into the locker room at halftime. UMass Lowell largest lead was 10 points with 3:39 remaining in the first half, 29-19.
 
The Rams started the second half with a 12-5 run and took the lead at the 17:08 mark, 37-36 and never relinquished it.
 
Trailing 70-65, Hayner hit a three with 3:20, to cut it to two but UMass Lowell couldn't get the defensive stop and the Rams managed to pull out the seven point victory.     
 
The Rams shot 60.7% in second half and 42.9% for the game, while UMass Lowell shot 36.6% from the floor.
 
The River Hawks struggled from the free throw line tonight shooting just 38.5% (5-13) and Rhode shoot 78.3% (18-23).
 
The Rams were led by sophomore Tayra Melendez who finished with 29 points. Senior Kerry Wallack was also in double-figures scoring 18 points. Wallack also grabbed 11 boards.  
 
The River Hawks got outrebound for the ninth time, 51-37.
 
Rhode Island improved to 3-7 and UMass Lowell falls to 0-10.
 
UMass Lowell will continue is nine game road trip Sunday at Central Connecticut at 1:00 p.m. and Rhode Island welcomes fellow America East member Vermont to The Ryan Center on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
