Box Score

HANOVER N.H. (Nov. 16, 2013) – UMass Lowell put four players in double figures but it wasn't enough as it suffered a 77-59 loss at Dartmouth College Saturday afternoon in a non-conference men's basketball clash at the Leede Arena.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 0-3 entering Tuesday's home opener against Brown University (7:00) at the Costello Athletic Center. Dartmouth improved to 2-1 overall and visits Maine Sunday, Dec. 1 (2:00).

Senior G Akeem Williams (Brockton, Mass.) led UMass Lowell with 16 points, shooting 4 for 8 in the second half. Junior G Chad Holley (New York, N.Y.) added 15 points and three rebounds while freshman F Tyler Livingston (Hudson, N.H.) chipped in 12 points on 4-7 field goal shooting (3-4 from 3-point range) in his first start.

Sophomore G D.J. Mlachnik (Muskego, Wis.) added 10 points.

Junior F Gabas Maldunas led five players in double figures for Dartmouth with 16 points, 17 rebounds and five assists as he shot 7-11 from the floor. Sophomore F Connor Boehm scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds while shooting 6-9.

Junior F John Golden chipped in 13 points (4-8 field goals) and grabbed seven rebounds while senior G Tyler Melville also had 13 points. Sophomore G Alex Mitola added 10 points and dished three assists.

"We gave them too many easy transition baskets in the first half," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Pat Duquette. "That was the difference in the first half. I think our offense struggled in the first half, which led to some easy baskets for them, including some open threes."

Dartmouth shot .547 for the game (29-53), including .640 in the first half which saw it convert 16 of 25 field goals. The Big Green also converted 10-19 attempts from 3-point range.

UMass Lowell shot .405 from the floor (17-42), including .429 in the first half and 7-17 from long range.

Dartmouth also enjoyed a 39-19 rebounding advantage, including 11-3 on the offensive glass, which led to an 18-3 edge on second chance points. Led by Maldunas, the Big Green outscored UMass Lowell 34-10 in the paint.

Dartmouth led 50-32 early in the second half, but UMass Lowell found its collective touch and went on a 16-4 run to cut the deficit to 54-48 with 8:57 left to play. Holley and Williams each scored five points in the spurt while Livingston and Mlachnik each hit key treys.

The Big Green answered with a 17-5 run, led by five points apiece from Melville and Maldunas, to post a 71-53 cushion with 2:33 left to play. UMass Lowell was unable to get within 15 points the rest of the way.

"As we executed our offense in the second half, I think our defense was better as a result of that," Duquette added. "But I think it came down to the first half where we gave up too many transition baskets and open threes in the transition game."

In the first half, UMass Lowell raced out to a 16-12 lead behind a pair of 3-point shots and a short jumper by Livingston and a trey by Mlachnik. Dartmouth, however, countered with a 15-1 run, fueled by two treys and two free throws by Golden, to grab a 27-17 lead midway through the half.

Dartmouth led at the break 42-27.
