Box Score NEW YORK, NY (October 6, 2013) – The UMass Lowell River Hawks (1-10, 0-1 America East) scored a late goal to pull within one of Columbia University (4-6) but could not close the gap, falling at Columbia, 2-1. The loss snapped Columbia's four-game losing streak while extending UMass Lowell's to four.
The host Lions scored two first half goals with tallies by Christina Freibott and Katie Ruesterholz. Freibott scored on a penalty stroke in the 12
th minute to put Columbia up 1-0. The Lions, who outshot the River Hawks 10-2 in the first half, went up 2-0 as Ruesterholz scored off a penalty corner in the 17
th minute for her 10
th goal of the season.
Despite a distinct advantage to the Lions in penalty corners (12-4) and shots (16-7), the River Hawks battled back in the second half. Sr. Forward
Melissa Effertz (Oceanside, Calif.) picked up her third goal of the season in the 60
th minute off a pass from Sr. Midfielder
Janelle DeCamillis (Littleton, Mass.) to pull UMass Lowell within one. The River Hawks could not close the gap, however, as the Columbia Lions held on to snap a four-game losing streak. UMass Lowell goalkeeper
Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) finished with seven saves while Columbia's Marlee Silverstein stopped three on the day.
UMass Lowell will return home Wednesday, October 9 to host Harvard before heading back on the road. The River Hawks will travel to Dartmouth College on Friday, October 11 at 3 PM in Hanover, NH before taking on the University of Pennsylvania in New Haven, Conn. on Sunday, October 13 at Noon.
